City Utility Departments Report Progress on System Upgrades and Maintenance

The Water Department repaired 21 water main leaks, replaced master meters for the housing authority, and installed 11 new services and 487 AMI meters.
City Council Approves Vegetation Management Ordinance Update

City Council Adopts Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan to Ensure Eligibility for Federal Disaster Funds
The City Council adopted Resolution 589, which approves joining the Division D East Alabama Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. This plan, updated and effective from May 28, 2026, to May 27, 2031, is a requirement for the city to remain eligible for FEMA mitigation funds, including the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA), and the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program. The plan identifies prioritized hazards and includes demographic data and community input. The adoption of this plan ensures the city can receive crucial federal disaster assistance in the event of a declared disaster.
City Council Approves Engineering Services Contract for Prop Water Treatment Plant Decommissioning
The City Council approved a resolution to request state qualification for professional engineering services for the decommissioning of the Prop Water Treatment Plant. Municipal Consultants has been selected as the most qualified firm. The contract, valued at over $2 million, will be fully funded by a grant, not the city's local budget. The selected firm, BR, will provide engineering, regulatory coordination, design, and construction administration.
Parks Department Hosts Youth Camp; Library Programs Continue Amid Summer Activities
The Parks Department is being recognized for hosting the Anthony Jennings Youth Football Camp, which brought many children together. The library is winding down its summer reading program with a grand finale event on July 22nd, featuring an animal show by Barb Carter and free lunch provided by Ernie's Hot Dogs and Frostbite Ice Cream. Dolores Haidok will present on '10 Things I Did Not Know About the Statue of Liberty' at the Adilia Russell Library on August 3rd. The library is also running a 'buy one, get one' book sale. Public Works recognized brush truck operators for their assistance in Project 412 Community Cleanup.
