Bedford City Council Approves Electric Power Franchise Renewal for Encore Electric Delivery Company

The ordinance updates and cleans up existing language, restates terms for Encore's use of right-of-way, and clarifies compensation. The agreement is for 20 years with potential extensions. Negotiations for specific rates are handled outside this franchise agreement, with the city currently generating approximately $1.5 million annually from the franchise, a figure expected to continue.
Bedford City Council Reappoints Mayor Pro Tem Dawkins, Finalizes Board and Commission Appointments
The Bedford City Council discussed and approved appointments for various boards and commissions, as well as the position of Mayor Pro Tem. Mayor Pro Tem Nichelle Dawkins was re-elected for another term. Councilmember Lehman was appointed to the Animal Shelter Advisory Board, Councilmember Gagliardi to the Beautification Advisory Board, Councilmember Farco to the Senior Advisory Board, and Mayor Pro Tem Dawkins to the Parks Recreation Advisory Board. Councilmember Gagliardi will also serve on the Trinity River Authority. The Library Advisory Board and Beautification Advisory Board retained their previous members, with Councilmember Gagliardi taking over Beautification. The council also reaffirmed its commitment to providing platforms like 'Mornings with the Mayor' for resident engagement.
Bedford City Council Approves Contract for Veterans Memorial Plaza Construction
The Bedford City Council approved a contract for the construction of the Veterans Memorial Plaza with MGS Cortex Construction Inc. for an amount not to exceed $218,500, including a contingency of $25,000. Funding for this project will be provided by Series 2019 geo-taxable bonds. Bids were solicited from 58 vendors, resulting in 10 responses, with MGS Cortex Construction Inc. being the selected bidder based on scoring criteria. The project is anticipated to commence in late July, with an expected completion date in November, coinciding with a planned celebration.
Friends of Bedford Animal Shelter Hosting 'Sun's Up, Shades Out' Event for Shade Structure Fundraising
The Friends of the Bedford Animal Shelter are organizing a fundraising event called 'Sun's Up, Shades Out' on Saturday, July 18th, with two shows at 2 PM and 7 PM at the Bedford School. The event aims to raise funds to improve the shelter's outdoor areas by providing shade, as two trees were removed during recent renovations, leaving the animals without adequate shade. The event will feature magician Kex Lang, face painters, a mindful experience presentation, raffle, and concessions, with tickets costing $20. Sponsors include HEB, MBT Financial Bank, and Camp Bedford. Animals from the shelter will be present from 3 PM to 6 PM for potential adoptions. The shelter has recently moved to Ulis, and residents are directed to take animals there for surrender.
