City Council Approves Seeking Professional Expertise for Public Pool Replacement
The City Council is moving forward with seeking professional assistance for the long-term future of the public pool at the rec center. The current pool is approximately 65 years old, beyond its expected lifespan, and poses significant maintenance and repair challenges. Due to its age and state laws requiring updated accessibility and safety features for new constructions, repairing the existing pool is not considered a viable or responsible option. The city plans to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) to gather expert assessments on the pool's condition, explore multiple design concepts for a replacement facility, obtain cost estimates, facilitate community engagement, and receive a final recommendation. The RFP will allow firms to present various options, including a straightforward renovation within the existing footprint and more expansive designs with additional amenities like a splash pad or water features. The process aims to gather detailed cost breakdowns, including construction, architecture, and operational considerations, as well as community feedback, before presenting voters with a plan.
Police Department Staffing and Vehicle Acquisition Approved by City Council
The City Council approved two requests from the Police Chief: one to promote a police officer to the rank of sergeant and another to hire two probationary police officers. The promotion to sergeant is necessitated by the retirement of John Fitzpatrick on June 27, 2026. The hiring of two probationary officers is to fill vacancies created by the retirements of Martin Dovski on April 25, 2026, and John Fitzpatrick on June 27, 2026. The council also authorized the purchase of a Chevrolet Colorado from Carl Automotive Group, waiving the sealed bid process, as it aligns with the department's fiscal year 2026 budget for capital expenses and will be funded through the general fund. Additionally, permission was granted for the O'Reilly's Auto Parts car show on Sunday, July 19, 2026, which will involve a street closure.
City Approves 2026 CDBG Action Plan and Multiple Infrastructure Project Payments
The City Council approved the city's annual action plan for the 2026 program year for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds and authorized its submission to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Additionally, pay estimates were approved for several infrastructure projects: Pay Estimate #1 for the Green Alley Program Phase 3 to J Nardulli Concrete Incorporated for $388,629, including a 10% retainer. Pay Estimate #1 for the PY2025 CDBG Roadway and Sewer Replacement Project to Lindal Brothers Incorporated for $290,6240, including a 10% retainer. Pay Estimate #2 for the PY2025 CDBG Roadway and Sewer Replacement Project to Lindell Brothers Incorporated for $484,62755, including a 5% retainer. Pay Estimate #2 and final for the PY2025 CDBG Sidewalk Replacement Program to Nardulli Construction Company Inc. for $42,65.95. Finally, Pay Estimate #16 for the Ogden Avenue Water Main and Sewer Project to Try Construction for $616,61827, with a 5% retainage processed from the utility fund.
