Chamber of Commerce Reports Membership Growth, New Programs, and Pufferbelly Days Preparations
Victoria Heling of the Chamber of Commerce reported on recent activities. Since March, 13 new chamber members have joined, and a new startup membership level was launched last month for entrepreneurs in business less than three years and with annual revenue under $50,000, offering a discounted rate ($100 for the first year). Two businesses have already utilized this program. The Blue Coats ambassador program has restarted in Ogden, with the first visit being the ribbon cutting for the Grand Community Center on Thursday. Weekly Red Coat visits and ribbon cuttings continue due to the influx of new businesses. The Golf Classic had 116 golfers and was a community-building activity. The Build a Better Boone initiative has been reinvigorated with its first quarterly meeting on July 28th. The LEAD program, a leadership development program, will run from September through May, aiming for 15 participants this year. Applications for the program launched last week. The New Teacher Breakfast is scheduled for August 14th. Pufferbelly Days is set for September 18th-20th, with over 20 events confirmed and merchandise pre-orders available. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the festival.
Second Reading of Ordinances for Urban Renewal Plans in Southeast Boone and East Central Housing
Two ordinances regarding the division of revenues under section 403.19 of the Iowa Code were presented for a second reading: Ordinance 2328 amending the Southeast Boone Urban Renewal Plan, and Ordinance 2329 for the East Central Housing Urban Renewal Plan.
Boone County Designated Thriving Community; Economic Development Initiatives Highlighted
Brenda from the Ames Economic Alliance provided an update on various initiatives in Boone. Key highlights included the upcoming rollout of the Boone County labor shed study results on August 13th. The county has been designated a 'thriving community' for the next two years, offering bonus points on funding applications and increased attention. Eggciter's investment in the company was celebrated. The presentation also touched on new housing programs, private development like Oak Park Estate, UBI programs for home purchases, and data provided by The Flex and the hospital. A new logo for the industrial park was introduced, and Page Flats is set to open in November with 28 new rental units. Unemployment rates in Boone have reached a new low, surpassing Story County. Construction at Daisy has surpassed 200 people on site. The formation of a new nonprofit foundation with Boone Growth will facilitate the acceptance of donations, such as the Fairway building, for conversion into a restaurant and sports bar, and will also serve as a vehicle for grant applications. Efforts are underway to start a young professionals group. Retraining opportunities for the local workforce are also expanding.
Art Advisory Team Seeks Public Input on Art Initiatives Via New Survey
Councilman Williamson shared information about a survey from the Art Advisory Team regarding public art interest in Boone. The survey, developed with the library, consists of six short questions and is due by August 31st. It seeks input on art activities, events, and public art interest from citizens. Copies of the survey are available.
Industrial Park Water Tower Rehabilitation Project Proposed for Spring Start
The Public Works Director presented information on the Industrial Park water tower rehabilitation project. The project is proposed to start in the spring and be funded over two budget years. A report from Dixon Engineering detailed the tower's condition and necessary repairs. The project aims to be completed before the Daisy projects to improve the city's utilities and infrastructure.
