Cordelane Police Department to Acquire New Tasers and Ballistic Helmets
The Cordelane City Council approved the purchase of 15 Taser devices and six ballistic helmets for the police department. The purchase aims to upgrade outdated equipment and maintain officer safety. The funding for these items will utilize remaining personnel budget authority from the department's existing general fund appropriation, allowing for the purchase of items that would have been acquired next year. This move is intended to manage costs and ensure officers have less-lethal and protective options. The old Taser models are out of service support and less effective, while the helmets have a 5-year lifespan for ballistic protection. The cost is spread over five years, with the first year's payment being made with current year funds.
North Idaho's First SASA, Julia Zimny, Reports on Drug Prosecution Efforts
Julia Zimny, the first Special Assistant United States Attorney (SASA) for North Idaho, presented an overview of her role and accomplishments. She explained that her position, established through community collaboration and with cities like Cordelane as pioneer partners, focuses on prosecuting drug crimes at the federal level. This initiative aims to save state tax dollars by adopting state cases federally. Zimny highlighted that her work involves collaborating with local prosecutors and law enforcement, investigating cases, and aiming to reduce drug trafficking in the community. She noted the strategic importance of the I90 corridor for drug interdiction. Zimny also shared her background, including her education at Gonzaga University and previous experience as a prosecutor in Spokane and King County, emphasizing her commitment to the Cordelane community.
Cordelane Council Approves CDBG Funds for St. Vincent de Paul Shelter Kitchen Upgrade
The Cordelane City Council approved the allocation of $3,799.89 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to St. Vincent de Paul North Idaho. These funds are designated for public facility improvements, specifically to enhance the kitchen at their women's and children's emergency transitional shelter. This grant is the final allocation from the CDBG Plan Year 2025 budget for community opportunity grants, bringing the total allocated for this year to $123,819. Previous allocations included funds for Heritage Place Apartments LLC and the Cordelane School District. The funds were reallocated from unused portions of Plan Years 2022 and 2024.
