June Crime Statistics Show Auto Theft Decline, but Concerns Remain
Sergeant Osme Cortez presented the June 2025 crime statistics and year-to-date comparisons. While total reported incidents were 89 for June, with 7 crimes against persons and 82 against property, auto theft remains a concern. There were 16 auto thefts in June, a slight increase from April and May, though year-to-date auto thefts are down 42% compared to last year. The presentation also highlighted the implementation of the FLOC safety system, an AI-powered camera system used for tracking suspect vehicles. Council members raised concerns about specific crime trends, including catalytic converter thefts and a desire for increased enforcement and data-driven strategies, such as using drones and decoy vehicles.
Art Installations and 250-Year Plaque Approved for Rosewood Park
The City Council reviewed and approved proposed artwork for Rosewood Park and a 250-year recognition plaque for the United States. The artwork consists of four mosaic pieces to be installed at the top of the hill in Rosewood Park, with material costs covered by the existing budget and implemented by city staff. The council also approved the selection and wording for a 250-year recognition plaque, intended to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. While the initial motion was to approve both, one council member expressed a desire to workshop the plaque's language to be more community-focused and to include military branches. Ultimately, the motion passed with a minor caveat regarding language refinement.
City Approves $2.27 Million Energy Efficiency and Solar Project
The City Council approved an energy services contract with Sizerco, Inc. for a citywide energy efficiency and solar photovoltaic installation project. The project involves converting 1,945 existing lighting fixtures to LEDs across seven city facilities, including the aquatic center, city hall, senior center, Camp Commerce, teen center, and EOC buildings. Additionally, the Teen Center will have a 17.3 kW solar panel system installed. The project is projected to save approximately $84,390 annually in electricity and operational maintenance costs. The total contract price is $1.8 million, offset by federal tax credits to approximately $1.6 million. The total project cost, including contingencies, is estimated at $2.272 million, to be funded from PC revenue. The agreement will include stipulations for local hiring and potentially a job fair.
