Recreation Committee Appointments Made; Public Questions Committee Structure
The council reviewed appointments for the recreation committee, including Urus Rivers, Stephanie Magnanada, Chris Kazada for three-year terms ending 12/31/2028; Christy Prepus, Mike Davis for two-year terms ending 12/31/2027; Lauren Batetto, Kristen Hayden for one-year terms ending 12/31/2026; Adana Algieri as alternate number one ending 12/31/2027; and Jason Fund as alternate number two ending 12/31/2026. Public comments questioned the presence of alternates on committees and the math on the term lengths, which were clarified as initial appointments as per the ordinance.
Washington Avenue Widening Project Sparks Resident Concerns Over Parking, Sidewalks, and Property Impact
Judy Parker inquired about the Washington Avenue improvement project, specifically regarding plans to widen the road between East Quackenbush and Dumont Avenue and the potential creation of parallel parking in front of four properties. The municipality confirmed they are looking to widen the road due to congestion and are seeking grant funding. They stated there is adequate room based on engineer's specs, but the widening would narrow the sidewalk. Washington Avenue is a county road, and discussions with the county are ongoing. Parker expressed concern that a specific business's parking issues might be driving the project and that the proposed changes could negatively impact property frontage. The municipality clarified that the project is preliminary, the county has a wider right-of-way, and utility relocation costs need to be assessed for feasibility. They are also exploring other areas for public parking to benefit downtown businesses.
Dumont Tax Bills Explained: Understanding Budget Increases and Assessment Process
Councilman Kelly explained the August tax bills are estimated to capture the increase from the current year's budget, resulting in an average increase of approximately $164 for the average assessed home in Dumont. This increase is comprised of $13 from the library tax, $410 from the school budget, and an estimated $80 from the county, totaling an estimated $667 increase on average. The county budget has not yet been fully certified. He also clarified that the five-year assessment process re-evaluates 20% of homes each year, with all home values being adjusted based on this sampling to maintain market value, and that tax increases are based on budgets, not solely on individual home value increases. The municipal budget is available online, and the school budget is on the Board of Ed website.
New Code Enforcement Official Hired; Bids to be Advertised for Road Projects
The Administrator announced the hiring of Bobby Rome as the new property maintenance and code enforcement official, who started on June 22nd. Additionally, the Administrator noted that bids would be advertised for the CDBG Sunnyside and Shady Side resurfacing project and the NJ DOT funded DPW Street project. Paving projects by PSEG are set to commence this week. The Administrator also mentioned that most members of the recreation committee are continuing their roles, and a committee meeting is scheduled.
