Resident Ms. Ashford reported incidents of excessive fireworks and dangerous reckless driving in the Shop City neighborhood. She described a Fourth of July event where fireworks were fired in the street, causing debris to land on her property and blocking roads. She also recounted an incident in Spring 2026 where numerous cars congregated on State Street for what appeared to be street racing, requiring intervention from the Illinois State Police. Ms. Ashford expressed concerns about personal safety, ignored stop signs, and the potential for widespread damage from fireworks. She questioned whether permits were issued for these events and urged the council to enforce existing laws or create new ordinances to protect residents. She emphasized that long-time residents and taxpayers deserve better services and safety.
City Council Approves Pump Station Repairs and Bathroom Remodel Change Order
During the Public Works Committee report, Resolution 46-2026 was presented, authorizing payments to Vanderventer Engineering for installing pumps at 47th and State and repairing pumps at various pump stations. The motion to accept item 6A passed with a unanimous vote from Councilwoman Parks, Councilman Coley, and Mayor Potter Third. Separately, during the Community Development Committee report, a resolution (9A) was presented for a change order regarding Resolution number 26-20010, an agreement with Nathaniel Rufin and Moore for the East St. Louis Township Bathroom Remodel Project. This change order was also accepted with a unanimous vote from Councilwoman Parks, Councilman Cooley, and Mayor Potter Perry.
