The Vester Alley Stroll and Car Show will take place next Saturday, July 25th, featuring cars and the patio zone. Ongoing sidewalk work is progressing eastwards, with fresh concrete being laid and crosswalks being filled, making downtown more accessible. The Fire Department is reminding residents to stay safe during heat waves, recommending hydration, avoiding caffeine, and utilizing cooling centers. They are also giving away water bottles.
City Extends Partnership for Senior and Disabled Resident Services
The council approved a proposal to continue a partnership with Oakland Livingston Human Services Agency (OLHSA) for lawn cutting, yard cleanup, and snow removal services for seniors, low-income, and disabled adults. This program, which previously included minor home repairs, will now focus solely on outdoor maintenance. The city has invested $366,000 in this program over the past couple of years, impacting 62 households and 77 residents. The new agreement, for $62,000 through October 31, 2027, will continue services for 54 existing households. OLHSA will administer the program, contracting with Lawn Clippers for services and monitoring the work. This continuation is necessary due to federal budget decreases in CDBG funding and HUD caps on certain service funds. The city planner will be able to reallocate approximately 252 hours towards planning initiatives due to OLHSA's administrative oversight. Residents have expressed gratitude for the program, which helps them age in place.
Mayor Pro Tem Commends Parks and Rec Summer Camp Program
Mayor Pro Tem Mikulski lauded the Parks and Rec department for their summer camp program, specifically Camp Joy Root, which her daughter attended. She described the camp as a tremendous resource, well-run, with great activities that left children smiling. She expressed gratitude for the program's availability to parents and the community.
GLWA Water Main Break Causes Temporary Water Pressure Issues
DPW reported a water pooling issue on 8 Mile Road due to a 54-inch GLWA water main break. Repairs were completed by Sunday, but the pipe will undergo further testing before returning to service. Ferndale is currently receiving water from the Southeastern Oakland County Water Association. The system adjustment is manual, with DPW monitoring software. Temporary periods of lower water pressure are expected due to peak season demand, with normal operations anticipated by the weekend. Residents experiencing brown water are asked to report it, as it may be due to sediment stirred by the change in water source. The 54-inch GLWA pipe is the primary source of Ferndale's water, connected via the Hilton Road pump station. The break occurred at 380 West 8 Mile Road. Ferndale's own water main is a 12-inch pipe connected to this larger GLWA system. The repairs involved significant excavation and welding, with a sectional replacement option available if needed. The 54-inch pipe continues to supply water to several other municipalities. No residents were reported to be completely without water.
Harding Park Rink Fundraiser Successful; Upcoming Events and Senior Programs Announced
The Harding Park rink fundraising campaign concluded, raising close to $30,000, which will be allocated towards project improvements. Park It Night, featuring music, a movie (Mario Galaxy), and a special appearance by Leo (Emmanuel's son), will be held at Harding Park this Thursday at 6 p.m. Flag football registration opens Friday, and soccer registration opens next week. For the Ferndale Senior Group, a new monthly newsletter through LPI is available, with August's edition coming soon. Digital subscriptions can be made via mycommunityonline.com. Upcoming August trips for seniors include a Brunch and Learn at the Outdoor Adventure Center discussing Belle Isle and a trip to Ortonville, visiting Cook's Dairy Farm and O'Malley's.
