Council Debates Moratorium on Data Center Project Amidst Citizen Concerns
Councilman Belleville proposed a 12-month moratorium on the data center project to allow for thorough discussion of citizen concerns. Concerns include health risks, environmental impact, water and electricity usage, property values, wildlife, and tax abatements. Residents expressed overwhelming opposition, skepticism over economic benefits, and distrust of the city council, alleging secrecy. The moratorium is intended to pause administrative processing while safety studies are conducted, particularly regarding municipal water supply, the electric grid, and battery energy storage systems. The developer aims to break ground in 16 weeks, which proponents of the moratorium argue is insufficient time to address all concerns. A community webinar is scheduled for July 23rd, but some council members prefer in-person public meetings.
Ordinance Proposed to Restrict Commercial Traffic on Gamble Cemetery Road
The council discussed an ordinance to regulate commercial traffic on Gamble Cemetery Road, limiting heavy trucks unless there is no other viable route. Exemptions were included for city vehicles, utility trucks (such as Spire and Amarin), school buses, and cases where no other route exists. The ordinance specifies that the Police Chief, acting as traffic engineer, will post appropriate signage to deter non-essential commercial traffic. The restricted stretch is from the intersection with Pounds Road to County Road CC. The ordinance is based on the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) assigned by the manufacturer, not the actual weight, to simplify enforcement.
