Flower Mound Hosts Inaugural 'Walk for Lives' to Raise Fentanyl Awareness
Christy Anderson organized Flower Mound's inaugural 'Walk for Lives' at Glenwick Park, part of a national United Against Fentanyl initiative. The event, held on July 11th, drew 28 official participants (with more attending) and involved creating sidewalk art, painting memory rocks, learning life-saving skills, and a memorial walk. Representatives from the Dallas DEA, Denton County Public Health, Lewisville Parks and Rec, and State Representative Baum Garner were present. Anderson highlighted the importance of community-level conversations about overdose prevention and addiction, emphasizing that fentanyl affects all demographics. She expressed hope for increased participation in future events to raise awareness and support affected families.
Flower Mound Council Delays Decision on Cultural Arts Center Amidst Financial Scrutiny
The council discussed the financial implications of the proposed Cultural Arts Center, particularly the operating delta of approximately $6 million in the first year, decreasing to $500,000 over five years. Options to bridge this gap include leveraging Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) revenue, potentially by re-positioning the venue as a convention or meeting facility, or using revenue from the TERS (Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone) fund. The council acknowledged that repositioning the venue would be a significant departure from the current art-focused plan and might require new revenue projections. Using TERS revenue is complicated by the potential dissolution of the fund and the possibility of that revenue reverting to the general fund. The council decided against putting the Cultural Arts Center to a November ballot vote, opting instead to continue discussions during the FY27 budget process to gain a clearer understanding of the town's long-term financial position.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Preliminary Treatment Area Set for $4.7 Million Upgrade
The council approved a construction agreement with GDC Industrial, Inc. for $4,735,820 to upgrade the Preliminary Treatment Area (PTA) at the wastewater treatment plant. The PTA, constructed in 2000, has experienced over 90 unscheduled work orders in the last 15 years, with parts becoming obsolete. The project includes replacing mechanical fine screens, washer compactors, grid pumps, motors, pipes, chutes, grid classifiers, PLCs, and electrical systems. A metal canopy and an H2S gas detection system will also be installed for environmental protection and safety. GDC Industrial, based in Alvarado, Texas, is currently working on a similar project in Sanger and has positive references. The project is funded through utility debt and is expected to reach substantial completion in winter 2028 and final completion in spring 2028.
Flower Mound Fire Department Partners with Scouting America to Launch Fire EMS Explorers Post
Yoli Johnson recognized the Flower Mound Fire Department for establishing a Fire EMS Explorers Post in partnership with Scouting America. The post, for 14-20 year olds interested in fire/EMS careers, has already provided certifications in first aid and incident response, and cadets participated in Independence Fest and water rescue training. Johnson praised the firefighters for their mentorship and Chief Henley for his support in creating the program.
