Traffic Signal Safety Upgrades Approved for Andrew Johnson Highway
The council approved a quote to 'refresh' the traffic signal at Andrew Johnson Highway and Irwin Highway. This involves redoing span wires, adding dual point attachments, retrofitting back plates, and installing new signal heads and wiring. The primary benefit is improved visibility of signal heads in varying sunlight conditions, enhancing safety. The project is budgeted. Additionally, the council approved a quote for traffic signal safety upgrades at the Commons entrance (mistakenly listed as Justice Drive) on Andrew Johnson Highway. This includes a complete respan, new conductors, back plates, and heads, similar to the Irwin Highway upgrades, to improve visibility and safety, especially in afternoon light. This project is also budgeted. The city received donated equipment, including signal heads, back plates, and cabinets, from Pigeon Forge, valued significantly.
Art Students Repair Vandalized Mural with Community Support
Students from Greenville High School's National Art Honors Society, led by art teacher Rachel Redmond, researched, designed, and painted a mural on Church Street. The mural was vandalized, but the students quickly repaired it with community support. Frontier Health owns the property, and the Greenville Women's Club sponsored the project. The police department's swift apprehension of the perpetrator was also noted.
SRO 'Camp Success' Provides Behavioral Reward and Safety Education
The School Resource Officers (SRO) hosted their fourth annual 'Camp Success' for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders who have demonstrated good behavior throughout the year. The four-day camp included activities focused on drug awareness and safety with the Anti-Drug Coalition (Grenville Thrives), team-building at Morristown Landing, and outdoor activities like archery and canoeing at 4-H camp. The camp also featured a demonstration by the Tennessee Highway Safety Office on the effects of drunk driving using pedal carts and equipment from the fire department and SWAT team. Approximately 100 children attended, an increase from previous years. The Greenville City School System provided facility use and transportation.
Special Event Beer Permits Approved for GM Truck Fair After Party and October Fest
The Beer Board approved a Class C special event beer permit for Harrison's Rod and Customs and Custom Scholarship Fund to host the 'GM Truck Fair After Party' on August 15th, 2026. Gentry and Nickel Ridge Winery will provide alcohol, both holding Class C permits. The investigation found no conflicts with town ordinances. The Beer Board also approved a Class C special event beer permit for Greene County Makers Inc. to host 'Depot Nots October Fest' on September 19th, 2026, with Gentry and Nickel Ridge Winery again providing alcohol. No conflicts were found for this application either.
Long-Serving Detective Retires After 22 Years with the City
Detective Stacey Hobbs retired after 22 years with the city and nearly 30 years in law enforcement. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community, acknowledging the challenging yet rewarding nature of the work. Hobbs is currently volunteering his time at the DA's office, assisting with a murder case from five years ago that is now going to trial.
