Work has commenced on the Kennedy Street pump station, involving the replacement of smaller pumps and their control panel, with larger pumps scheduled for removal and refurbishment or replacement to ensure continued functionality. Additionally, a worn rake assembly for the bar screen is being replaced, with components expected by late September or early October. Separately, Bergen County's gas reservicing was completed in May and June.
Police Department to Acquire Tactical Vests; Pedestrian Safety Upgrades Underway; Litter Concerns Raised
The Hackinack Police Department is acquiring 43 tactical armored vests through a Bergen County co-op approved vendor. Safety improvements are being made to pedestrian crossings, including bumpouts and rapid beacons on Grand Avenue, and milling/paving with ADA ramps and detectable warnings on Spring Valley Avenue. Flashing pedestrian crossing signs were discussed, with one reported out of service on East Salem by Fashini, though initial inspection found traffic signals working; a separate pedestrian crossing signal issue on Midtown Bridge by Bowler City is being addressed. Concerns about parking on West Anderson Street were reviewed, noting existing resident permit parking and snow emergency restrictions. Residents expressed concerns about litter and trash in the city, with penalties and enforcement mentioned.
Infrastructure Projects Advance, Traffic Safety Measures Reviewed, and World Cup Impact Anticipated
Updates were provided on several infrastructure and traffic-related projects. Work has begun on Grand Avenue for pedestrian improvements, including completed drainage and ongoing concrete work for bumpouts, rapid beacons, and thermoplastic line striping. City infrastructure work, including realigning storm pipes and filling a damaged pipe, will occur concurrently on River Street and Kennedy Street. City paving work has begun on West Lookout, West Anderson, and Coolidge streets, with McKinley and Davis streets scheduled for milling and paving soon. The city engineer has determined the current traffic control configuration at Atlantic Street and Prospect is the safest option, despite resident suggestions for stop signs at Atlantic and Prospect and relocation of a traffic safety device to Prospect at Thompson. A flashing pedestrian crossing sign on East Salem by Fashini was reported out of service, but inspection found the traffic signals operating properly; the issue identified was with a pedestrian crossing signal on Midtown Bridge by Bowler City, which is being repaired. Concerns about parking on West Anderson Street were addressed, noting it is a resident permit parking area between 2-6 AM and included in the snow emergency parking ordinance. The upcoming 2026 Soccer World Cup final nearby is expected to increase traffic, visitors, and congestion, with recommendations for residents to plan ahead and exercise caution.
New Ordinances Introduced for Recreation and Littering; Affordable Housing and City Governance Discussed
The city council introduced two new ordinances: Ordinance 13-2026, which amends Chapter 36 concerning the recreation department, and Ordinance 14-2026, which amends Chapter 109 regarding littering. Both ordinances passed their first reading and will be considered for final passage on July 28th, 2026. Public hearings will be held for these ordinances. During public comment, a resident questioned the implementation and requirements for affordable housing within developments and its relationship to Section 8 housing.
