Independence Day Committee to Plan Rescheduled Event
The Independence Day Committee will meet on Thursday morning to discuss plans for a rescheduled date following the cancellation of the original event. Water Usage and Hydrant Flushing Schedules Detailed; Supply Remains a Consideration
For May 2026, the town averaged 74,000 gallons of water per day, with 1.9 inches of rain recorded. The electronic DMR was signed late, but the town was informed they are in good standing. The town emphasizes checks and balances in its operations, especially concerning licensed operators. The village will be flushing hydrants the week of July 20th, followed by the town the week of July 27th. Water usage is generally okay, but residents are reminded that water supply is not infinite, despite recent rainfall and full reservoirs, due to significant usage from sprinkler systems.
Main Street Project Variance, Building Department Activity, and Rooster Issue Update
The Zoning Board of Appeals will review a variance application for 447-457 Main Street, concerning the Park Shades project. The Consolidated Planning Board had a productive meeting with no public hearings scheduled for an upcoming Thursday, as noted on their website. The building department processed 26 permit applications, issued 21 permits, 2 operating permits, and 25 certificates of compliance in a recent month. They also conducted 61 building inspections, 17 fire safety inspections, issued 18 violation notices (closing out 18), performed 6 municipal searches, and handled 22 FOIL requests. The department has invested over 120 man-hours into addressing the 'rooster issue' in High Falls.
Sanitation Regulations Delayed for Further Review
The board is reviewing amended sanitation regulations. While draft regulations have been prepared and distributed, including existing and amended versions, the board decided to hold off on acting on them immediately to allow time for digestion and potential refinement of garbage can inventory data. The focus is shifting towards the number of apartments or rental units rather than just the number of cans. A decision regarding sanitation regulations is anticipated once accurate data is confirmed.
5K Event Success and Patriot Garden Maintenance Challenges
The 5K event, held early in the morning, had approximately 250 runners and was considered a success by organizers Dean and Vicky Joerger, who manage zero-waste initiatives. Despite the heat, which caused 100 people to require ambulance attention at a cross-country event in Pennsylvania, the 5K participants completed the race. The Patriot Garden, near the lake, is experiencing issues with its well and a lack of volunteer maintenance, leading to a recommendation to reduce the garden's complexity to allow town maintenance staff to manage basic upkeep like grass cutting.
