Fire Department Addresses Line of Duty Death Classification and Firefighter Health Initiatives
The City Council discussed and indirectly addressed issues surrounding a deceased firefighter's workers' compensation claim and the department's classification of his death as 'line of duty'. Fire Chief Chris Young clarified that the department's decision to classify Steve Sanneman's death as line of duty was made independently of the workers' compensation determination to ensure proper honors and cover funeral expenses. He detailed significant steps the Liberty Fire Department has taken to reduce cancer risks for firefighters, including providing new gear, installing extractors, and implementing annual screenings, which have led to early detection and treatment of several firefighters. The department continues to advocate for presumptive cancer legislation.
Storm Sewer Improvement Project Approved
The City Council approved an ordinance approving an agreement with Whole House Construction for the 412 Belmont Storm Sewer Improvement Project. The project's amount is $18,000,000, with funding authorization up to $205,700. The council voted to waive the rules for first reading and then approved the ordinance unanimously.
Community Celebrations and Upcoming America 250 Events Highlighted
Councilmembers and attendees discussed recent community events including Liberty Fest, a 4th of July celebration, and the unveiling of a Benjamin Franklin statue. Councilmember Phillips highlighted the year-long America 250 celebration, mentioning upcoming events like a beer crawl, film festival, and other activities. Councilmember Graham praised the success of Fourth Fest and the subsequent parade, the founding father trading cards, a street festival, and David Folk's reading of the Declaration of Independence. The Benjamin Franklin statue unveiling was also noted as a great addition to downtown.
Police Expansion Project Contract Amendment Approved
The City Council approved an ordinance amending ordinance number 12191 to approve a construction manager at risk guaranteed maximum price amendment with McCallan Gordon for the police expansion project. This amendment increases the current contract amount to $20,825,207. The council voted to waive the rules for first reading and then approved the ordinance unanimously.
