Sixth Ward Councilman Delgado Discusses Storm Response, Infrastructure Repairs, and Safety Measures
Councilman Delgado reported on the July storms, noting that areas in the sixth ward that normally flood have not experienced flooding, thanking the DPW, fire, police, and emergency personnel for their response. He mentioned delays in tree trimming due to emergency responses but assured residents that lists are maintained and addressed. Sidewalk repairs are underway throughout the ward, and residents whose sidewalks were lifted by city trees are asked to report them. He discussed work with Conrail to remove hazardous trees, noting a specific tree deemed healthy by the state is still a concern. Speed limit signs have been increased in several areas due to speeding issues, with the police department working to mitigate the problem. He also mentioned the victory in the Meridia v. City of Linden case and updates on special needs nights at Wheeler Park, which will add more dates in August. Wheeler Park is a county park, but the council works with residents.
Ninth and Tenth Ward Councilwoman Hudac Praises DPW, Announces Yard Sale, and Updates on Park Renovations
Councilwoman Hudac thanked the DPW for their efficient cleanup following recent storms, heat waves, and air quality issues. She mentioned that residents relying on electricity for life-sustaining medical equipment should register with PSE&G and Register Ready. Residents of the ninth and tenth wards will have an opportunity for a free yard sale. Renovations and upgrades at Alcala Park are continuing, and the councilwoman is in active conversation with engineering regarding street paving and sidewalk repairs. She urged residents to stay safe during the current storm.
Nicholas Michael Gonovski Honored for Presenting Declaration of Independence and Community Service
Nicholas Michael Gonovski was recognized with a proclamation for his presentation of the Declaration of Independence. Gonovski is a lifelong resident of Linden, a member of the National Honor Society, competed in varsity track and field, and served as operations officer of the Junior Reserve Officers Training Course (JROTC) at Linden High School. He has continued his service at Seton Hall University within the Army ROTC, working towards commissioning as an officer. He has served as captain of the colored guard team and co-captain of the Ranger Challenge Team. Gonovski is known for his dedication to community initiatives, including supporting food banks and placing flags at the cemetery for Memorial Day. His presentation of the Declaration of Independence on the 250th birthday of the United States is seen as bridging national history with future leadership.
Linden Launches Opioid Abatement Initiative, Advances Affordable Housing, and Redevelops Downtown
Mayor Derek Armstead announced the city's opioid abatement initiative, funded by a lawsuit settlement against pharmaceutical companies. The initiative aims to educate and prevent further opioid abuse. Linden was designated a stigma-free community, working to eliminate stigmas surrounding mental health and substance use disorders. Progress is being made on low-income housing, with active discussions to acquire Nuno's property at 308 Rosel Street for affordable housing development. An update on the downtown redevelopment plan was given, with NJA and New Jersey Transit launching a joint plan for the commuter parking lot at 101 West Elizabeth Avenue to create a transit-oriented housing community. Orman thanked resident Charlotte Yakate for her assistance during a recent incident involving downed wires and a tree, highlighting her role as a good neighbor. She also noted the need for repainting crosswalks, particularly near schools and high-traffic areas, and mentioned that work on this is planned.
