Lomita Water Production Facility Upgrade Complete, Promising Significant Savings

The City Council received an update on the Cypress Water Production Facility, a six-year effort to upgrade the city's main water production facility. The project, costing $5.5 million, included the installation of a Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filtration system to address benzene levels, improve water aesthetics, and treat organic compounds. The facility is now complete and awaiting a permit from state regulators to begin operation. The city plans to use a 70% local groundwater and 30% imported water blend initially, with the goal of eventually reaching 100% local groundwater. This upgrade is expected to save the city $2.1 million annually compared to importing 100% of water from the Metropolitan Water District.
