Lufkin to Seek $21 Million in State Funding for Water System Improvements
The City Council approved a resolution authorizing the city to apply for financial assistance from the Texas Water Development Board's water supply and infrastructure fund. The potential funding, up to $21 million with no local match required, will be used for eligible water system improvement projects. These projects may include rehabilitating nine groundwater wells, replacing approximately 50,000 linear feet of water transmission lines, and making aeration improvements at water plant number one and recirculation line installations at water plant number three to improve water quality and system operations. Staff recommended approval, citing system needs and the availability of this funding.
Lufkin Reports Positive Sales Tax Growth and Stable Financial Performance
The city's financial status reports were presented, showing that July sales tax revenue was up over 1% compared to July of the previous year, with the fiscal year to date being approximately 3% higher. The financial status of revenues and expenditures for the first nine months of the fiscal year indicates that major funds are performing well and the budget is being executed as planned. The city attorney, Christie, noted this was her last meeting before being sworn into a new role on July 30th, expressing appreciation for her four years of service.
Lufkin City Council Reviews Updates to Industrial Zoning Standards
The City Council considered proposed updates to the city's industrial zoning performance and development standards. These amendments aim to balance industrial growth with the protection of nearby residential neighborhoods by establishing new provisions for building setbacks and height, landscape buffering, mechanical equipment screening, outdoor lighting, and noise, smoke, and odor emissions. The changes apply only to new industrial development and expansions of existing facilities exceeding 10% building area increase, with existing facilities remaining legal nonconforming uses. The ordinance passed its first reading.
