City Council Denies Rezoning Request for 31075 John R. Road
The city council considered a request to rezone a parcel of land located at 31075 John R. Road from B1 Neighborhood Business District to B2 Community Business District, with conditions offered by the applicant, Smok and Bear Tobacco, on behalf of the property owner South Lion Company LLC. The planning commission recommended denial, citing that the proposed rezoning with conditions did not satisfy the review criteria outlined in the city's zoning ordinance. Specifically, the conditions did not further the city's master plan goals regarding community character and future land use, did not result in an enhancement of the project area, and were not likely to be enforceable due to ambiguity. The council ultimately voted to deny the rezoning request.
City Council Addresses Power Outages and Communicates Support Resources
During closing comments, city council members and staff discussed the recent power outages experienced over the Fourth of July weekend. They emphasized that the city council and mayor do not have control over DTE's power restoration efforts and cannot directly influence when power is restored. Efforts were made to support residents during the outage, including opening the fire station for those needing to charge devices or access essential medical equipment like CPAP machines, and distributing water donated by DTE. The city council approved the purchase of a new brush chipper, model BC1800XL, from Vermeier Midwest of Fowlerville through the Sourcewell Purchasing Cooperative for $102,853. This replacement is for a 2006 Bandit chipper that has reached the end of its service life and is rated in poor condition. The purchase was deemed a priority replacement to serve the needs of the Department of Public Services, with the Vermeier unit believed to offer the best value.
