Bethany Legacy Foundation Awards $500,000 for Park Investments
The City Council approved the acceptance of a $500,000 grant from the Bethany Legacy Foundation for park investments. This grant, part of approximately $1.1 million in new grant dollars secured by the city recently, will be disbursed over two years ($250,000 in 2026 and $250,000 in 2027). Half of the Bethany Legacy funds must be utilized downtown, and the other half on the hilltop. These funds will support ongoing park projects and future investments.
Council Votes Fail on Resolutions for Officer Removal and Censure
During the meeting, two resolutions related to council governance were presented. Resolution 2026-9C, proposing the removal of Jim Bartlett as President Pro Tem, failed for lack of a second. Resolution 2026-10C, proposing to censure Mayor Bob G. Courtney for alleged transgressions of council rules, also failed for lack of a second. Public comments extensively discussed the conduct of council members and the mayor, particularly regarding the handling of public comment and allegations made during previous meetings.
City Council Considers Annexation for New Housing Developments
The City Council heard the first reading of two ordinances (2026-13C and 2026-14C) proposing the annexation of approximately 23.16 acres known as Madison Woods and 80.54 acres known as Kaler Farms. These developments are planned to include a mix of housing types, from single-family homes and patio homes to townhomes and market-rate apartments, along with new park amenities. The annexation process is voluntary, with all landowners in the territories petitioning for annexation. A fiscal plan was also presented, indicating no anticipated cost increase for the city and minimal revenue impact on the township fire department due to the current land use.
City Tree Board Outlines Urban Forestry Plan and Budget
The City Tree Board presented an update on their activities, including reasons for tree removal, the development of an urban forestry management plan, and budget expenditures. The board highlighted the need for a comprehensive tree inventory and assessment, aiming to increase the city's tree canopy by 5% over the next 5-10 years through strategic planting and maintenance. They also discussed pest management strategies and the challenges posed by invasive species.
