Parking Lot Upgrades Planned, DPW Resource Allocation Clarified
The Borough Administrator addressed concerns about the Edgar and Poole parking lots, stating that the master plan is a guiding document used by the planning board. The agro-parking lot (likely referring to Edgar or Poole) is in very bad shape and will be paved. The plan includes shade and permeable surfaces for stormwater management, meeting regulatory requirements. The Shade Tree Commission and school board have been consulted, and the project is going out to bid. Regarding DPW resources and bulk pickup, the Administrator explained that bulk pickup is time-consuming and manual, with many communities charging for it or not providing it. Parameters have been set for the number of pickups to manage resources and prevent misuse. The focus is on non-manual garbage pickup to prevent employee injuries.
Summer Concert Series and Library Programs Highlight Community Engagement
Councilmember Sukon shared updates on community events and a personal story. The Arts Council is hosting a free concert featuring the Randall Graves Band on Wednesday, July 15th, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Matutchin Library Park. This is part of a summer series in collaboration with the MDA. She also shared a heartwarming story about connecting with a former resident who moved away 80 years ago, highlighting the enduring sense of community in Matutchin, which was also expressed by her nine-year-old daughter. Councilmember Jothwani provided library updates, including an adult painting class ('Safari Sunset') on July 22nd and 23rd, and access to Press Reader (digital newspapers/magazines) with a library card. The next Library Board of Trustees meeting is July 14th.
Human Relations Commission Plans Community Conversations on Belonging and Community Work; Movie Night Rescheduled
Councilmember Branch provided updates from the Human Relations Commission and the Recreation Commission. The Human Relations Commission is planning a community conversation on belonging, bias, and support for Saturday, September 26th, to explore what deeply resonates within the community. They are collaborating with the Arts Council to incorporate personal stories into the program, drawing from anonymous stories gathered at recent MDA Pride and Juneteenth events. Another community conversation, 'What Makes a Community Work?', is being planned with the library for October, involving community representatives to discuss their roles, challenges, and fostering connection. The Recreation Commission's postponed movie night has been rescheduled to August 8th at Tommy's Pond.
Main Street Project to Commence, Causing Segmented Road Closures
The Main Street project in Matutchin is set to begin, with work closing Main Street in segments starting tomorrow evening. The work will occur in approximately 100-foot segments at night from Talmadge to Amboy Avenue. Once Amboy Avenue is reached, the schedule for day work between Amboy Avenue and Brunswick will be determined based on the progress of the night work. The hope is to complete all work by the end of the summer. Challenges exist due to numerous underground utilities. The project involves improving much-needed infrastructure, including coordinating with the Grove Avenue Bridge replacement and the replacement of an over 100-year-old water main. Communication and collaboration between the borough, Middlesex Water Company, and the vendor have been extensive. Residents will be notified via Nixle or other electronic notifications of any changes or impacts.
Borough Approves Bond for Capital Improvements, Discusses Police Vehicle Fleet
The borough is proposing an ordinance (2026-12) for a bond that appropriates $2,616,000 and authorizes $2,484,000 in bonds or notes for various improvements and purposes within the Borough of Matutchin and Middlesex County. This is identified as the capital ordinance for 2026. The ordinance passed on second reading and will be published according to law. The council also discussed the police vehicles replacement, with the Chief of Police explaining that some vehicles have over 120,000 miles and require regular maintenance to ensure officer safety during high-speed responses. Concerns were raised about the feasibility of electric vehicles for police use due to current technology limitations and repair capabilities.
