Riverwalk Underpass Murals Approved to Enhance Aesthetics and Deter Vandalism
The City Council considered a proposal from local artist Presley Bergmoser to install murals in three locations along the Riverwalk: under the Monroe Street Bridge, under the Mcome Street Bridge, and on the lower ramp access point from the Mcome Street parking lot. The $55,000 project aims to beautify the city, potentially deter vandalism, and incorporate public engagement opportunities, such as involving participants from stewardship camps in painting one of the murals. The proposal was accepted, utilizing capital improvement funds.
Riverwalk Safety Enhanced with Installation of New Cameras
The City Council approved the installation of Moracki cameras along the Riverwalk, primarily at the Monroe Street Bridge. The purpose is to enhance safety and security for Riverwalk users. The cameras will cover the area from the Martin Luther King Bridge east to Soldiers and Sailors Park and will be operated via city hall Wi-Fi. Funding was available in the budget, with additional funds identified from the IT budget for necessary equipment and installation.
City Council Approves New Collective Bargaining Agreement with IAFF
The City Council approved the collective bargaining agreement between the city and the IAFF (International Association of Firefighters). The agreement was unanimously approved by the IAFF last week and has been provided to the council for review and approval. This action concludes negotiations for the public safety collective bargaining agreement, which expired this year.
Public Hearing to be Scheduled for IHM Senior Living Community's Memory Care Building Expansion
The City Council considered and scheduled a public hearing for an amendment to the existing Planned Unit Development (PUD) plan for the IHM Senior Living Community at 610 West Elm Avenue. The proposed amendment would allow for the construction of a new memory care building on the western side of the campus. The planning commission recommended approval of the amendment, and the council action is to schedule the public hearing to allow for public input before final adoption.
Citywide Parks and Gateway Signage Project Receives Change Order for Expanded Installation
The City Council approved a change order for the citywide parks and gateway signage project, increasing the contract amount by $17,330 with Valley City Signs. This adjustment is due to modifications in sign locations, sizes, and types based on site visits and feedback from previous designs. The updated plan will result in a total of 33 signs being installed, an increase from the originally planned 22 signs, with fabrication and installation expected to begin in the fall.
