Township Council Meeting - Monday, July 20, 2026
Published: Jul 20, 2026
Township Event Naming Sparks Discussion on Independence Day Recognition
During the public participation segment, two residents, Carl and Trevor Shell, addressed the council regarding the naming of the township's summer event. They expressed disappointment that the event, which included fireworks and a drone show, was promoted as 'First Responders Night' and did not explicitly mention Independence Day or the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The council and staff explained that the event's timing often falls outside of July 4th due to an agreement with neighboring towns to avoid fireworks on the same night, and that the intent was to honor first responders while also celebrating the country's birthday. They acknowledged the feedback and agreed to incorporate 'Independence Day' into future event promotions.
Councilman Praises Town Staff and Resident Engagement
Councilman Green acknowledged Meredith for her extensive work for the town and thanked residents for their participation. He also thanked Carl for bringing attention to the Independence Day naming issue and confirmed the correction would be made. He praised the recent event as awesome, despite the heat, and gave kudos to Jerry for organizing it.
Town Council Adopts No Parking Zone Ordinance for Elbow Lane
The council held a public hearing and adopted Ordinance 26-9, which creates a no parking zone on a portion of Elbow Lane. This ordinance was presented for a second reading and public hearing.
New Businesses Open, Women's Equality Day Event Announced
Deputy Mayor Caroline Coen highlighted two business grand openings: Victoria's Little Luke's Grand Spa and Victoria's Secret in Centerton. She also mentioned Women's Equality Day on August 26th, with the Alice Paul Institute hosting an event on August 22nd from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
Town Council Approves Changes to Licensing Agreement Process
The council considered Ordinance 26-20, which amends Chapter 95A of the municipal code concerning the process for licensing agreement requests. The amendment changes the process so that licensing agreements will no longer require a council meeting presentation, but will instead go to the engineer for recommendation and then to the manager's office for approval. The ordinance passed with unanimous consent from Councilman Mustakis (Aye), Councilwoman Janu (Aye), Councilman Green (Aye), and Deputy Mayor Catalan Cole (Aye).
