Mount Lebanon Deer Management Program Shows Significant Success in Reducing Collisions and Environmental Impact
The commission discussed and provided an update on the ongoing deer management program, highlighting its effectiveness in reducing deer-vehicle collisions and its positive impact on the local environment and economy. The program has been in place since 2015, employing archery and sharpshooting methods. Recent data indicates a significant reduction in deer-vehicle collisions, estimated at 40%, leading to substantial cost savings for residents. Additionally, the program has contributed venison to local food banks, providing thousands of meals. The commission contrasted Mount Lebanon's program with that of neighboring communities, emphasizing its data-driven, professionally managed, and fiscally responsible approach. Public comment included a resident questioning the data and attributing collisions to speeding vehicles, which was countered by the commission referencing the plurality of anecdotes not being data.
