Council Considers Stricter Fines for Truck Traffic on Residential Roads

The committee discussed Ordinance 2026-64, which aims to amend city ordinances concerning truck traffic and establish enhanced penalties for violations. Councilman Aens introduced the ordinance, citing issues with heavy truck use on residential roads in his ward and the ineffectiveness of current warnings and fines. The proposed ordinance increases fines for truck traffic violations, with a first offense of $150 plus court costs and a second offense within two years escalating to $500. The goal is to deter trucks from using residential back roads unless they have a delivery destination there, primarily for safety reasons related to potential hazardous material spills. Public comment included a suggestion to define violations by gross combined weight rather than a simple tonnage limit, and to potentially adjust penalties based on vehicle's commercial weight rating. Councilman Aens responded that the police department does not have portable scales and that the current six-ton limit (12,000 lbs) is in place. He also explained the $150 initial fine is to avoid drivers switching venues to a different court, which would mean the city wouldn't keep the fine, and that the higher second offense penalty is intended to be impactful. The ordinance was moved to be sent back to council for further consideration.
