Downtown Parking Analysis Reveals Increased Usage, Focus on Communication
Rod presented the results of the latest downtown parking analysis, conducted on a Friday with good weather and no competing events, between June 5th and June 12th. The analysis covered 11 blocks in the downtown area, revealing a total of 1,449 parking spaces. On average, downtown parking was 29% occupied, with a peak of 33% at 11 a.m. and a low of 26% at 9 a.m. Block 5 showed the highest occupancy at 49% average and 75% peak at 7 p.m. Comparing current data to previous studies, the number of spaces used during survey times has nearly doubled from 2,400 in 2017 to 4,300 in 2026, indicating increased activity downtown. Discussions centered on the perception versus reality of parking availability, the need for improved wayfinding and communication about parking options (including less-known areas like Section 10 and Block 11), potential signage improvements, and the role of technology like apps or kiosks. Board members emphasized that while the math shows sufficient parking, communication is key to managing public perception and supporting new businesses. Addressing pedestrian pathways from parking areas to businesses was also highlighted as important for the overall downtown experience.
