She concluded that growth without a sustainable financial foundation increases risk.
Variance Approved for Equipment Dealership at 3111 Nathan Hail Avenue
The council reviewed a request for a variance at 3111 Nathan Hail Avenue for Pageant Machinery's rental retail establishment. The variance is needed because the property is located near residential homes. The applicant plans to begin demolition and property cleanup soon. The variance would allow the property to be used for an equipment dealership, including sales, service, parts, and operations for construction and agricultural equipment. The property has been unused for some time.
Council Approves Landscaping Service Proposals, Recommends Turf Masters and B&B Lawn and Landscaping
The city council approved proposals for landscaping services. The city received five proposals, which were reviewed and scored by a committee. For general landscaping maintenance across parks, rights-of-way, and other city properties, Turf Masters was recommended. Turf Masters also received the recommendation for athletic fields, including the Pascagoula Sports Complex. For the Highway 90 Causeway, B&B Lawn and Landscaping was recommended. Following council approval, contracts will be negotiated.
Pascagoula Gocha School District Highlights Student Success, Strategic Planning, and Future Initiatives
Dr. Catera Payton, Superintendent of Pascagoula Gocha School District, presented an overview of the district's performance, strategic plan, and future initiatives. The district serves approximately 6,450 students across 16 schools and employs nearly 1,400 professionals, making it a large regional employer. The district offers 19 career technical programs, 10 dual credit opportunities, and 12 AP courses. The district's strategic plan guides all decisions, focusing on student vision alignment. Academically, the district is currently B-rated, with eight A-rated schools, six B-rated, one C-rated, and one D-rated. Several schools received statewide recognition. The district is working towards regaining A-rated status. Beyond academics, students participate in 64 athletic teams and various arts programs. Recent initiatives include strengthening school safety with weapons detection systems, restructuring the central office, merging elementary schools, launching online registration, updating the transportation department, and establishing a literacy team. Future plans include facility improvements like the Gocha High School track and roofing projects, and welcoming new leadership in curriculum instruction. Dr. Payton emphasized that schools are the heart of the community and investing in students ensures a bright future for Pascula.
Lighthouse Lime Washing Decision Tabled Amidst Cost and Effectiveness Concerns
The council discussed a resolution approving a quote for exterior lime wash coating for the Round Island Lighthouse. Melvin Pierce Painting provided the lowest bid of $43,700. This would be the fourth lime washing since the lighthouse's relocation, averaging about $40,000 each time. Originally, lime washing was intended to match new bricks to original ones temporarily, with the eventual goal of returning to the lighthouse's original tan brick appearance. However, the contract requires pressure washing first to remove dirt and mildew, which makes the bricks appear dark. Painting is not permitted by the Department of Archives and History due to grant funding restrictions. Council members expressed concern about the recurring cost and questioned the effectiveness of lime washing. An option to table the decision to obtain quotes solely for pressure washing was discussed, as some felt only pressure washing might suffice or as a first step before deciding on lime washing again. The motion to approve the quote was tabled indefinitely pending further investigation into pressure washing costs and effectiveness.
