While the city's water system has not detected PFAS as of July 1st, 2023, enrolling in the settlement protects the city's right to recover compensation and qualifies it for recovery from 3M and DuPont settlements should PFAS be found in the future. City Council Approves Electric Standby Service Tariff to Mitigate Risk from University Cogen Operation
The City Council approved Ordinance 1834, establishing an electric standby service tariff. This tariff is necessary to manage the power supply for Radford University's proposed cogeneration (cogen) operation. The university's cogen facility, which is a federally licensed qualifying facility, will reduce its power purchases from the city. The new tariff allows the city to pass through wholesale power costs from PJM Energy Market to Radford University, mitigating the financial risk the city faces without this structured agreement. The effective date for the tariff was set for July 1st, 2026, to retroactively cover the month of July and protect the city from potential financial losses.
