The City Council considered and approved an adjustment to the annual sewer service charge for the Abalone Cove sewer system for fiscal years 2026-27. Staff recommended a 3.4% increase, consistent with the March Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the Los Angeles, Long Beach, Anaheim area. This increase is permitted by Ordinance 367U and is intended to help cover the fluctuating operational and maintenance costs of the sewer system, which are often exacerbated by landslide hazards. The charge applies only to occupied parcels connected to the sanitary sewer within the Abalone Cove sewer district. If approved, the increase would range from $7.30 to $32 annually per parcel. The Council voted unanimously to adopt the resolution, increasing the charge by 3.4%.
City Warns Residents of Scams Involving Fake Payment Requests and AI-Generated Violations; Reissues Battery Safety Warnings

Both instances have been reported to the Sheriff's Department. Residents are urged to call the city if they encounter any suspicious notifications. Additionally, the City Manager reiterated concerns about lithium-ion battery fires, noting a dozen incidents in the past year and announcing an aggressive public education campaign on safe charging practices.
City Recognizes Three Volunteers for Outstanding Service on Advisory Committees
The city recognized three volunteers for their service on advisory committees: Lauren Zeminski (IMAC, March 2023-June 2026), Totran Radke (IMAC, July 2024-June 2026), and Edward Blake Lamar (EPC, June 2023-present). Lauren Zeminski's contributions included reviewing the capital improvement program, evaluating technology infrastructure, and participating in studies on landslide water reuse and stabilization projects. Totran Radke focused on landslide and water reuse feasibility studies, emergency infrastructure resilience, and wildfire preparedness, and advocated for community input. Edward Blake Lamar provided input on emergency plans and events, hosted an EPC booth, shared emergency readiness information, and supported the development of easy-to-understand readiness materials. The Mayor and Council expressed deep gratitude for their time, energy, and sacrifice.

During the Lamita Station report, Captain provided an update on crime data, noting a 39% reduction in Part 1 crimes compared to the previous year (143 reported this year vs. 213 last year). There was one residential fire caused by an e-bike charging in a garage. Protesters gathered peacefully at Terranea. Two operations were conducted: UC surveillance and vehicle suppression along PB Drive South/Pelican Cove, and UC surveillance for catalytic converters and vehicle burglaries. The Core Team discussed an upcoming earthquake EOC exercise. Upcoming events include National Night Out, a Lomita Station car show, and a golf tournament. Councilmember Bradley inquired about the frequency of house fires related to e-bike lithium-ion batteries, with the City Manager confirming less than a dozen such fires in the past year, prompting a commitment to an aggressive public education campaign on lithium battery safety.

Jam Coffee and Company, located at 4007 Mirrorless Drive in Rancho Palos Verdes, was recognized as a small business. Founded by friends Karen Carranza and Candace DeLeyba, the name 'Jam' is inspired by their daughters' initials. The business officially opened on June 25th, 2026, and offers a mobile coffee cart alongside its storefront, featuring seasonal lattes, teas, biscuits, and homemade jam. The founders envisioned Jam as a welcoming gathering place for the community. The Mayor and Council members praised the business for revitalizing the plaza and bringing life to the east side of the city. Current hours are Wednesday-Sunday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with potential for expanded hours.
