New Ordinance Proposed to Regulate Police Use of License Plate Readers
The city council is considering an ordinance to enhance transparency and regulation of police automatic license plate reader (ALPR) systems. The ordinance addresses privacy, civil liberties, and potential misuse concerns that arose after a public hearing on a COPS grant for ALPR equipment. Key provisions include authorized and prohibited uses (e.g., prohibiting facial recognition and discrimination), data sharing protocols requiring formal MOUs and controlled access, mandatory training for all users, and a robust auditing system with quarterly and annual reviews. Northwest Community Plan Update Focuses on Safety, Housing, and Sustainable Growth
