Resident Expresses Concern Over Water Company Facility Proposal, Citing Impact on Neighborhood Character
During a resident's public comment, concerns were raised about a proposed 50 ft long, 50 ft wide, and 50 ft high facility by the Middle sex Water Company. The resident expressed worries about potential flooding and mud issues, as well as the installation of an automatic gate and industrial-style fencing. The resident argued this would fundamentally change the character of the street, replacing residential views with fencing around a utility facility, and that neighbors invested in a residential community, not a commercial or industrial site. They requested the council encourage the water company to explore less intrusive alternatives, preserve landscaping, and find solutions that protect their facilities without diminishing the neighborhood's character, emphasizing the desire for the company to be a 'better neighbor'.
Request Made to Add Speed Humps to Oxford Avenue and Terrace Amid Road Projects
Councilman Benj requested the addition of speed humps to Oxford Avenue and Terrace as part of ongoing road projects. He noted that while Lyndon Avenue and streets off Maple Avenue have speed humps, Oxford and Terrace, particularly on the northbound side of Maple Avenue and the southbound side of Lyndon Avenue, lack them. This is causing issues for drivers turning onto Oxford or Terrace. He proposed adding speed humps as a change order to the current road projects.
Citizen Honored for Life-Saving CPR Efforts at Paman Park
Kathleen J. Book was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the South Plainfield Police Department for performing CPR on a man who collapsed while playing pickleball in Paman Park. The incident occurred on June 1, 2026, when emergency communications received a 911 call. The victim was not breathing and had no pulse. Kathleen Book, a fire teacher with 38 years of experience and CPR training, instinctively administered chest compressions and rescue breaths, reviving the man before emergency services arrived. The man was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
South Plainfield Council Approves Redevelopment Plans and Green Team Initiative, Tables Ordinance 2404
Ordinance 2404 was tabled for further review. Resolution 26-257 was amended to increase the contract amount from $99,347.74 to $121,500, with a new total contract amount of $1,535,626.44. Ordinance 2402, authorizing various capital improvements costing $30,000, received final adoption. Ordinance 2403, adopting a redevelopment plan for the TUMI site, also received final adoption. Ordinance 2405 amends Chapter 17, Article 1 of the federal code to establish the Environmental Advisory Committee as the 'Thorough Green Team' and assign responsibility for the Sustainable Jersey program. Ordinance 2406, which supplements the code to exempt data centers from performance standards, was introduced. Resolutions 26-243 through 26-257, as amended, were approved.
