Upcoming Community Events and Programs Announced
The Cultural Arts and Heritage Commission is planning South River Day for October 17th and is seeking vendors and talent (singers, musicians, dancers). The food bank is running a school supplies drive until August 15th, with drop-off locations at Corpus Christie Church, Holy Trinity Church, and the South River Food Bank. The EDC is organizing a farmer's market every Sunday in September and October at the Ober Street parking lot, featuring up to 15 vendors and food trucks. The Shade Tree Committee meets at 48 Washington Street at 6:30 PM on the second Thursday of the month (with potential date switches) to address tree-related concerns on verges. The Environmental Commission's next meeting is August 30th at 6:30 PM at 48 Washington Street, as the previous meeting was cancelled due to lack of quorum. Recreation programs (baseball, softball, soccer, cheerleading, football) are open for fall sign-ups via the borough website. The Recreation Advisory Board meeting is September 21st at 6 PM at 55 Re Street.
Grants Secured, Tax Grace Period Extended, and Shared Services Agreement Proposed
CFO Joe Duca presented several resolutions related to grants and financial adjustments. A recycling tonnage grant was received, along with grants for the County Office on Aging totaling $4,000 for information assistance and $5,000 each for socialization/recreation and mental health programs. A Chapter 159 resolution will incorporate these grants into the budget. Approval was sought for the turf field at Veterans Fields, funded by a county grant of $120,000. A resolution to extend the grace period for third-quarter taxes was discussed, with bills expected the last week of July, payable by August 21st, after which interest applies retroactively to August 1st. A shared service agreement for tax collector services with the Borough of Miltown was also presented.
Fire Department Reports on Equipment Status and Upcoming Drill
The Fire Chief reported that the brush truck is back in service after repairs. However, the ladder truck is currently out of service at Campbell Supply due to difficulties in finding parts for its age. The chief is awaiting an update on when it will be operational. The department is preparing for end-of-summer fireworks and has a full-scale drill scheduled for Sunday involving multiple agencies. Mutual aid agreements are in place with East Brunswick District 2 and potentially Serraville for ladder truck support.
Cannabis License Delayed Due to Litigation; Business Owners Express Concern
Mark James, representing High End Cannabis at 109 Water Street, expressed distress over not receiving a license due to pending litigation from another party seeking to change cannabis CRC rules. He has invested significantly in the property and business, including hiring employees, and is facing financial strain. He requested the council vote on the matter to allow him to proceed while he handles the legal aspects. The mayor advised against commenting due to pending litigation, and Resolution 209 would not be acted upon. Sabrina Ponttoro, COO of New Jersey Cannabis Consulting Group, also spoke, emphasizing the negative impact of the delay on local business development, job creation, and tax revenue for South River. She urged the council to vote, stating that the dispensary is ready to open and has met all requirements, and that litigation should not stall progress that benefits the town.
Ordinance Introduced for Short-Term Lease of 6 Thomas Street Property
Ordinance 2026-18, authorizing a short-term lease of public property at 6 Thomas Street to 55 Main Street (SR Urban Renewal LLC), was introduced. This ordinance is a required step to formally authorize the borough to lease the property to the highest qualified bidder for leasehold, not purchase. The lessee will be responsible for their own insurance and payments. The ordinance passed its first reading and will proceed to a second reading and public hearing on August 17th, 2026.
