Bill Smeck Honored for Dedication to Springfield's Veterans

Bill Smeck was honored by the Springfield Township Board of Commissioners for his significant contributions to the veteran community. Smeck, a long-time Springfield resident and veteran, has been instrumental in organizing Memorial Day celebrations and coordinating the Springfield Hero Banners program. The Hero Banners program recognizes local veterans by displaying their photos and service details throughout the township. Smeck was also selected as the Grand Marshal for the now-canceled Fourth of July parade. His dedication to researching individual veterans' histories, including details of their service, deployments, and sacrifices, was specifically highlighted.

Reed Road Bridge Replacement Project Presented to Springfield Township Board

The Springfield Township Board of Commissioners heard a presentation on the Reed Road Project, which involves the replacement of Bridge 36 over Whetstone Run. The existing bridge, built in 1962, is in fair condition with cracking and spalling. The proposed project includes replacing it with a pre-cast reinforced concrete box culvert to minimize construction time. The project will maintain three 12-foot lanes but will eliminate the existing sidewalks due to a lack of continuous pedestrian access on either side, opting instead for widened shoulders. The project timeline anticipates environmental clearance submission this month, final design in January 2027, and construction starting in November 2028, with an estimated completion in 2030. A detour route of approximately 1.83 miles is planned. Utility relocations are a significant aspect of the project, and temporary construction easements are anticipated.
