Suamico Village Board Reviews Q2 Financials, Discusses Disaster Reimbursements
The Suamico Village Board reviewed the second quarter financial report ending June 30th. Revenues are currently under the expected 50% due to timing of state funding, but this is not a concern. Expenditures are slightly at or above the 50% mark, partly due to recent natural disasters (snowstorm, flooding), but reimbursements are expected. Overall, finances are not a concern at this time. The board also discussed potential FEMA and state disaster fund reimbursements, noting that Brown County did not qualify for federal FEMA assistance, but expects state reimbursement for the snowstorm and flooding. Clarification was provided on property tax allocation: village 22%, county 24%, school district 54%, NWTC 4%. The board commended the finance director and team for managing finances well despite recent disasters.
Suamico Village Board Denies Operator's License Application After Review
The Suamico Village Board considered a recommendation to deny an operator's license application for Sophia J. Wands. The denial was based on guidelines concerning convictions for qualifying offenses within the past five or ten years. Wands had multiple misdemeanor convictions, including disorderly conduct and intimidation of a victim, with offense dates in February and March 2023. Despite the recommendation for denial, the board engaged in a lengthy discussion, considering Wands' personal circumstances, mental health struggles, her efforts toward recovery, and her demonstrated responsibility. The board ultimately voted to deny the license application in a 6-1 vote, with one trustee voting against denial to support her appeal.
Suamico Joins Regional Food Truck Fire Inspection Program
The Suamico Village Board approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for a regional food truck fire inspection reciprocity program. This program standardizes fire inspection processes for mobile food vendors across northeast Wisconsin, starting in the Fox Valley. It allows food truck vendors based in Suamico to get their fire inspection done at the Suamico Fire Department. This service is provided at no additional cost to the business owner and is valid for one year. Currently, Green Bay is also on board with the program, and after a grace period, vendors must have a passing inspection to operate in participating municipalities. The Suamico Fire Department staff are state-certified inspectors, and this MOU ensures their inspections are recognized in other participating areas.
Suamico Village Board Accepts Sunny Meadows Development
The Suamico Village Board accepted the Sunny Meadows development, which includes Sunny Meadow Place and Summerlin Court. The development's public infrastructure has been inspected and installed according to village requirements. This acceptance is a formality allowing the building department to issue building permits. The village has retained funds from the developer to cover any potential issues during the extended warranty period. The developer remains responsible for site disturbance and erosion control.
Suamico Advances Water Infrastructure Project with New Treatment Plant and Water Tower
The Suamico Village Board received an update on the water infrastructure project, which includes a new water tower, water treatment plant, and a new well, located in the northwest portion of the village. The project has been designed with input from village staff and submitted to the DNR for approval. The plans include a water tower and two pressure reducing valve stations to create high and low-pressure zones. The treatment plant will house a radium removal process due to high radium levels found in the well. The estimated budget for the water treatment plant and related infrastructure, including a 20% contingency, is approximately $9.9 million, an increase of about $400,000 from the previous year's estimate. The water tower is budgeted at $2.68 million. The board confirmed the decision to proceed with a water tower over a ground storage reservoir based on long-term cost-effectiveness and system pressure needs. Funding applications have been submitted for a safe drinking water loan, and a $1 million congressional appropriation has been secured for the water tower. The project is anticipated to go out for bid in September/October for a spring 2027 construction start.
