The city manager presented options: proceed with the second bidder at more than double the hourly cost ($120/hour vs. $43/hour for AM Electric), bring back AM Electric in some capacity, or defer the project for 6-12 months. Commissioners Joseph and Lama, residents of the affected neighborhood, strongly opposed deferring the project due to recent outages and the desire to bring power lines down. They supported adding the item back to the agenda for the evening meeting to discuss options further, with a supermajority vote expected to allow this.
Breezeline Updates on Fiber Rollout in Golden Shores; Commissioner Expresses Service Frustrations
The commission heard from Lars Lafus, General Manager for Florida at Breezeline, regarding internet services in Golden Shores. Breezeline has invested significantly in undergrounding fiber optic cables in Golden Shores and Sunny Isles, offering multi-gig and 2.5 gig symmetrical services in Golden Shores. Commissioner Joseph expressed frustration with previous internet service from AT&T and Breezeline, detailing a history of poor service and reliance on T-Mobile Wi-Fi. She inquired about upgrading her home's internal wiring from copper to fiber to achieve higher speeds. Breezeline confirmed they can deliver 2.5 gig service to the home but cautioned that internal Wi-Fi systems and devices dictate the actual speeds experienced. The discussion also covered how services are provided to high-rise buildings, with a representative explaining that structures like Winston Towers often operate on a bulk account basis and may utilize fiber-to-the-unit networks. AT&T was invited but did not send a representative, leading to speculation about their commitment to the area.
