Victor's Aviation Highlights Community Programs and Open House
Nathan Miller of Victor's Aviation addressed the council, thanking them for their support and highlighting the city's ranking as a top place to live. He informed attendees that Victor's Aviation is a flight academy offering flight training and STEM camps in partnership with Troy Intermediate School District. Miller announced an upcoming 'Wings and Wheels' open house on August 22nd at the executive airport, aimed at raising community interest and showcasing aviation opportunities. He emphasized the goal of making the local airport a prominent executive airport.
Sunday Fryen Nominated and Approved for Zoning Board of Appeals
During the City Council meeting, a nomination was made and approved for Mr. Sunday Fryen to the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) as a regular member. He will serve a term expiring on April 30th, 2027, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of Mr. Desmond. The nomination was moved by Mayor Promchan and supported by Council Member Bloom. The council voted unanimously to approve the nomination.
Proposal for Enhanced Trail and Bike Route Safety Presented
During public comment, Dale Murish presented an updated proposal for improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety on multi-purpose trails and bike routes. He suggested prioritizing the striping of existing multi-purpose trails to make them safer, followed by new bike route signs for specific roads and modifications to crosswalk signage. He also proposed using existing wide sidewalks on Big Beaver Road to create a bike path. Murish recommended starting with the cheapest and most important item (striping) and then proceeding with other items as funds become available.
Council Discusses Data Center Concerns and Community Engagement Initiatives
Council Member Brooks raised concerns about data centers, noting their disruptive potential and the proactive measures taken by neighboring municipalities. While acknowledging Troy is built out with no imminent concerns, she stressed the importance of prioritizing resident health, safety, and welfare and maintaining nimbleness in legislative response to rapidly changing technology. Council Member Chamberlain responded by outlining reasons Troy has not focused on data centers, including being 98% built out, high land costs, and the city's master plan emphasis on mixed-use development and housing. She mentioned that Michigan Municipal League (MML) has resources on data centers. Council Member Gunn highlighted the significant electric and water consumption of data centers as major concerns, suggesting they might need to install their own grids. Council Member Bloom referenced DPW's existing 'Touch a Budget' information at 'Touch a Truck' events, suggesting leveraging this for future events. Mayor Baker clarified his role in reading the Declaration of Independence as part of a national effort and thanked Jen Peters. Mayor Pat shared personal experiences of immigrating to the US and running for office, emphasizing the American dream. All council members acknowledged the importance of discussing data centers and resident welfare, with some suggesting further information from administration on zoning regulations for data centers.
City Approves Bid Waiver for Emergency Fiber Optic Relocation
The City Council approved a bid waiver for Fiberlink Incorporated to perform an emergency relocation of fiber optic cable. The cable connects the public works building to the city network and internet, and its current route along Rochester Road poles is being affected by the Rochester Road project. Fiberlink, the current contracted vendor for the school district's larger fiber network, was selected due to familiarity and to expedite the process, avoiding delays to the main project. The estimated cost is $15,347.45, with an additional $12,000 for contingency to replace damaged underground conduit if necessary. Funds are available in the Information Technologies operating budget.
