Downtown Urbandale Branding Initiative Presented, Emphasizing People and Rediscovery

The council received a presentation on the strategic insights and visual direction for downtown Urbandale's branding initiative. A consultant, Denova Marketing, was hired in February. Focus groups revealed a desire for 'third space' opportunities, unique experiences, and social engagement. Residents expressed love for Urbandale but sought more than just necessities. Competitor cities often use similar messaging, lacking originality. The proposed brand strategy emphasizes 'people over place,' referencing the historical 'end of the line' trolley as a metaphor for connection and rediscovery. The brand promise centers on downtown Urbandale being a gateway connecting past and future, fostering community and offering a vibrant destination. Next steps include finalizing messaging, logo development, and creating partner toolkits for a future rollout, with the brand expected to be visible at a pop-up park event on October 10th.

Upcoming Community Events Include Story Reading, Creek Exploration, and Musical Performance

The council discussed the status of the 'Touch a Truck' event, which was successful despite hot weather, thanking the police, fire department, and various partners. Three upcoming events in partnership with 'Icon' were highlighted: a 'Water Tale' story reading on Thursday morning at Walnut Creek Access in Walker Johnston Park, a 'Creek Stompers' event on August 11th in the same vicinity, and a 'Pulling Strings' harp performance on Sunday, July 26th, location to be determined based on the weather forecast. These events are promoted as ways to introduce children to 'Icon Water Trails' and local parks.

Line 7 Project Subdivision and Site Plan Amendments Approved

The council addressed three items related to the Line 7 project at 142nd Street and Waterford: the preliminary plat, the final plat, and an amendment to the site plan. The project, previously a single lot of over 13 acres, is being subdivided into two lots for the development of five 45-unit multifamily buildings, a clubhouse, pool, and two banks of garages. The subdivision line between Lot 1 and Lot 2 was established, with Lot 1 designated for Phase 1 construction. A key condition for the site plan amendment is ensuring independent fire pump service to both lots, as well as ensuring each lot is separately served by all utilities. The council approved the preliminary plat subject to conditions, Resolution 211-2026 for the final plat, and the amendment to the site plan.

Easement Vacation Approved for Timberland Village Plat 2

The council considered the vacation of storm sewer and surface water flow easements for Timberland Village Plat 2, located at 138th Street and Quail Ridge Drive. This action was a condition of the preliminary plat approval, with new easements to be established with the final plat. No objections to the public notice were received. The council approved Resolution 194-20226 for this item.

Magnolia Heights Plat 10 Final Plat Approved

The council reviewed the final plat for Magnolia Heights Plat 10, located at 150th Street and Coyote Drive. This phase of the larger Magnolia Heights project comprises approximately 20 acres and includes 37 single-family lots of varying sizes (50, 60, and 70 feet wide) with specific setback requirements. Outlot X is designated for stormwater purposes, and Outlot Z will be dedicated for parkland. The council approved council letter 8650.
