The commission also moved to go into executive session for personnel matters.
Waycross City Manager Reports on Infrastructure, Budget, Community Development, and Modernization Efforts
The City Manager provided a report highlighting ongoing efforts in infrastructure, budget, and community development. Infrastructure priorities include road and transportation initiatives on Brunel and Scrivens Avenue, with Scrivens Avenue being the first attempt to use speed strips or tables. Water and sewer systems are being addressed strategically due to age. The FY 2027 budget priorities include maintaining a balanced budget and pursuing grant opportunities. Community development efforts include issuing business licenses, implementing new constructions, downtown revitalization, and strengthening partnerships. A discussion on animal management is scheduled for Thursday night, with a focus on micro-chipping and registration, and the temporary nature of the animal shelter was clarified. The city is also tracking community court cases, code violations, blighted properties, and demolished structures, with a 90-day tracker for new properties. Future discussions in August will focus on code renovation and animal management. Modernization efforts include making city services accessible via phone and a new website with an AI chatbot, 'Ask Wally'. The city manager also reflected on community resilience shown after a storm and emphasized the need for community ownership and proactive solutions, contrasting 'building' versus 'burning'.
