Finance Committee Approves Budget Resolutions, Reallocates CDBG Funds, and Selects Dell for Microsoft Licensing
The finance committee met on July 10, 2026, and presented several resolutions for the new fiscal budget year. One item of concern was the reallocation of CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) money from the Bennett Drive playground to the Georgia Senior Center. Despite his initial concern about communication, he did not request to table the resolution. The committee also approved resolutions for adjusting fund balances for the general and co-servings funds, which is a standard annual procedure. Additionally, the city will proceed with Microsoft licensing through Dell Technologies, as Dell offered a lower bid than Nordec and included technical support, resulting in cost savings.
Richard Blank Honored for Dedicated Military Service to Country and Community
During the meeting, Richard Blank was honored for his military service. He graduated from Weir High School in 1966, served in the Vietnam War from October 1968 to October 1969 as a sergeant in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, and earned multiple decorations, including two Bronze Stars. He received an honorable discharge in May 1970. Mayor Dean M. Harris presented the recognition on July 13, 2026. Blank expressed his appreciation for the honor.
Resident Highlights Severe Rodent Infestation from Abandoned Property; City Attorney Outlines Legal Options
Resident Cindy Parker raised concerns about an abandoned property at 1201 Hamlin Way, owned by an out-of-state owner who is unresponsive to city complaints. The property has led to a rat infestation affecting adjacent properties, posing a health hazard. Parker thanked Housing Inspector Nick Stewart and City Attorney Ben Square for their efforts in addressing the situation, including allowing police and inspectors access to the property, where a severe rat problem was confirmed. The city is undertaking extermination efforts, which Parker will partly fund for her property. She is seeking clarity on the next steps, which City Attorney Ben Square explained could involve a nuisance complaint in circuit court, potentially leading to repairs or demolition and a lien on the property. The discussion also touched upon the representation of people of color on city boards, with a resident questioning the extent of this representation and a council member stating that three individuals of color were appointed to boards at the last meeting.

The Weirton Senior Center is requesting funding to create an outdoor space for seniors. The proposed outdoor area would allow seniors to enjoy fresh air, which is beneficial for their well-being.
