West Jordan Gathers Public Input on 24th of July Fireworks Restrictions; Mayor to Make Final Decision

The West Jordan City Council held a public hearing to receive input on the resolution regarding 24th of July fireworks restrictions, following a statewide decision by the governor to leave such decisions to local officials. The mayor, in consultation with the fire chief, had initially decided to maintain the existing fireworks map from March. Councilmember Jacob proposed the meeting to gather public and council input. Several options were presented by the state forester, including using existing maps, altering them, implementing a citywide ban, or altering dates. Various community members spoke, with some advocating for a ban due to fire risk and others opposing it due to economic impact on fireworks businesses and the tradition itself. The council ultimately decided not to vote on a resolution, allowing the mayor to make the final decision based on the input received and staff recommendations.
