Willowick Police Department Reports Success in Violent Crime Reduction Grant Objectives
Lieutenant Lawrence provided an update on the violent crime reduction grant awarded to the Willowick Police Department. The grant, which funded three Flock Safety surveillance cameras, aimed to reduce reported violent crime by 10% and participate in 10 or more community events. The department achieved both objectives, reporting a 10% decrease in violent crime (43 cases versus 48 in the previous year) and participating in 16 community events during the grant's lifetime. The department also received a question regarding parking issues on 300 street near Fern and Mildred, and Lieutenant Lawrence stated officers would investigate.
City Council Denies Fence Variances for Gary Wisdom, Encourages Resubmission
The City Council heard two administrative appeals from Gary Wisdom regarding variances for a fence. The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) had recommended denying both variances. Council members discussed the applicant's request to move the fence one foot off the sidewalk, noting that the ordinance requires it to be four feet off. The council ultimately voted to deny both variances as presented. Mr. Wisdom was advised that he could resubmit a new plan with adjustments to be heard by the BZA next month. The council also discussed that if he reapplies for the same case, the $150 fee would not apply.
City Council Approves Additional Appropriations for Calendar Year 2026
Ordinance 2026-25 was approved, amending Ordinance 2026-6 to provide for additional appropriations from various city funds, including the General Fund (101), SCMR Fund (202), Senior Citizens Center Fund (220), and Donations and Bequest Fund (803), for current expenses and other expenditures during the calendar year ending December 31st, 2026. An emergency was declared for this ordinance.
City Council Authorizes Acceptance of State Homeland Security Grant
The City Council approved Resolution 2026-26, authorizing the mayor to submit grant acceptance documents for the Fiscal Year 25 State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) grant award. An emergency declaration was included to expedite the process.
City Council Approves Cyber Liability Insurance and Security Camera Contract
The City Council authorized the mayor to purchase cyber liability insurance through Weikert Insurance for the policy period of June 26, 2026, to June 26, 2027, at a cost not exceeding $14,200. The council also authorized the mayor to execute a five-year agreement with ComSurve for security cameras and related software for a total cost not to exceed $32,356.24. During the discussion for the ComSurve agreement, Council member Ms. Bisbee raised questions about data storage location and backup responsibilities, which the city representative committed to clarifying further.
