Village Council Adopts Climate Action Plan, Sets 2040 Emission Reduction Goal
The Village Council considered and adopted Resolution R542026, approving the Village of Wanetka Climate Action Plan. This plan is aspirational and intended as a guide for community partners, stemming from the comprehensive plan's environmental pillar. It includes a framework for measuring, planning, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, setting a target of 40% below the 2022 baseline by 2040. The plan was developed with the consulting firm KAMA and involves collaboration with community stakeholders. Updates on the village's and IMEA's sustainability plans and electric generation were also presented. The plan focuses on emissions from buildings, energy, transportation, and waste, with residential buildings being the largest source. Natural gas usage for heating and cooking was highlighted as a significant area for reduction. Implementation will involve the Environmental Forestry and Sustainability Commission (EFSC) working with the village manager's office to prioritize initiatives. A public dashboard will be available to track progress. IMEA's sustainability plan update and progress reports were also discussed, including the B hollow solar project and initiatives like CVR, DURMS, and BES.
